ABOUT
After the industry revolution, the factories played an important role in the economy and how people spent their daily life. The efficiency of the work improved a lot and with the technological advances it is improved even more. However, this factory age brought bad consequences to the environment, since the carbon footprint and the greenhouse gases increased in an exponential way. Nowadays, in the world there are a lot of companies that leave a lot of waste after their production line what make things even worse. Nevertheless, there some companies that are conscious about this fact, therefore in their production line they use eco-friendly supplies and technology in order to reduce their carbon footprint.
A very well-known company that is aligned with this concept is Patagonia. Its owner Yvon Chouinard is a guy that love living in the nature and he had the courage to focus the company into the eco-friendly way in order to save the world, in a moment where nobody was thinking about it (or almost no one). As he had said, “the reason I am in business is I want to protect what I love”, “the key to consumerism is just to consume less but consume better” and that is the philosophy of his company, make high quality staff that you can use it whenever you want, “because if you are not part of the solution you are still part of the problem”. They have released announcements encouraging people to not buy more things than what they need, even their own products. Patagonia also donate 1% of his annual sales to environmental activists in order to help save the planet.
Here you can find a video, where Yvon Chouinard is talking about his philosophy of management.
Another successful company that goes green is IKEA, the biggest home furnishing retailer. 60% of the products that they offer are based on renewable materials, being 10% of them based on recycled ones. While they are planning to use only renewable and recycled materials to produce their products by 2020. Also, they plan to reduce more greenhouse gases than what they produce in the value chain, what is helpful for the environment because they not only plan not to contaminate, but also help to reduce the amount of these gases. In the other hand, they have installed tens of thousands of solar panels in their buildings, and they are starting to sell solar panels to their customers.
The third company that I will show you is Unilever. Unilever has incorporated the idea of worry about the environment and social responsibility into their company philosophy. In 2010, they launched the “Unilever sustainable living plan” that creates sustainable growth. It has three main goals, first, improve the health of more than 1 billion of people by 2020 in terms of giving facilities to people who need to improve their health, hygiene and nutrition. Second, reduce their environment impact of their production and use of their products, by half by the year 2030 through the reduction of the greenhouse gas impact of their products, reduce the consumption of water, their waste in terms of packaging and obtain 100% of their agricultural raw materials in a sustainably way by 2020. Third, enhance the quality of life of millions of people worrying about fairness in the workplace, opportunities for women and an inclusive business to their farmers and actors of their value chain.
